The monument was built to commemorate the founding of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, which took place on Buzludzha Peak in 1891.  It would serve as a grand assembly hall, where party members could gather for meetings, ceremonies, and other significant events, reinforcing the ideology and power of the communist regime.

The monument was completed in 1981 and took 7 years to build. It cost approximately 14 million Bulgarian levs, equivalent to $35 million US today. Its unique UFO-like design stands as a testament to the era’s grandiose architectural ambitions.

As of 2024, entry into the building is impossible, as all potential access points have been securely sealed. There is even a police box on site, however when we went there didn't appear to be anyone inside or patrolling the area.

A group called the Buzludzha Project is working to preserve and reopen the monument.  While some Bulgarians prefer to forget the past, those involved with the project view the site as historically significant. "Our vision is to preserve the building as a place for dialogue, tolerance, and education..."
